Even as protests seem to abate, the NFL is hemorrhaging market share on both weekend and week night games.  In fact, those ratings are falling so fast and the market share plummet is costing the League hundreds of millions in ad revenue.

This is how bad things are getting.  Three weeks ago, market share was down about 11%.  Two weeks ago ratings were down another 3.5% to a 10.6 in Metered Market Share.  This past Monday night’s NFL ratings sank another 17% to a Metered Market Share of only 7.

Despite their own rules against it, the NFL has turned a blind eye to the anthem protests and the disrespect of our national symbols by pampered, arrogant, belligerent millionaires who feign outrage and heartbreak at the plight of their fellow Americans. Their sincerity would perhaps come under much less scrutiny if every player who protested were accompanying their protest with a check for half a million or perhaps a million dollars.  But alas all we get is holier-than-thou rhetoric and condescension.

While the players might be back slapping each other for their “caring hearts,” fans apparently are buying the alligator tears of the gridiron elitists.  One would have thought that the NFL would have been smart enough to learn the lesson being taught at ESPN where their hard-left policies are hammering ratings and revenue both of which continue to evaporate like a vapor in the desert.

Now with the ratings slide approaching avalanche proportions and threatening the NFL’s profitability which also threatens Goodell’s job, Goodell has seen the light and enlightened self-interest has replaced his pompous hyperbole.

“Like many of our fans,” Goodell wrote, “we believe that everyone should stand for the national anthem. It is an important moment in our game. We want to honor our flag and our country, and our fans expect that of us.

“We also care deeply about our players and respect their opinions and concerns about critical social issues. The controversy over the Anthem is a barrier to having honest conversations and making real progress on the underlying issues. We need to move past this controversy, and we want to do that together with our players.”

Despite this flaccid attempt at amelioration it is obvious the NFL has been damaged and the wound they created will take a long time to heal. The statement was weak, and lacked an adequate apology to offended fans.  The NFL could have stopped this from the beginning but they wimped-out.  Finally, a few of the owners while still living in fear of the players have told the everyone, “no more.”  While this may not be a strictly principled stand, they are perhaps at least clear thinking enough to have at least chosen the side of economic survival.

Jerry Jones told his team if you don’t stand for the anthem you will sit for the game.  It would appear that Donald Trump was right from the beginning in staking out a position that while heavily criticized by the liberal media, shot right to the heart of everyday Americans who were outraged that a bunch of spoiled temperamental millionaires would disrespect our country that has given them so much, even while on foreign soil.  Trump, it seems is one of the few people in either politics, the media, or sports that does not suffer from a tin ear.
